RESPONDING TO THE ADHĀN

In the Name of Allāh.

Islām comprehensively addresses all aspects of our existence, including what to say when the Adhān (Call to Prayer) is made. The Adhān holds a significant place within the Islāmic faith; it not only serves as a reminder to perform prayers but also offers an opportunity to gain substantial rewards.

The Prophet (ﷺ) recommended the following straightforward yet impactful actions upon hearing the Adhān:

1. Repeat what the Muazzin says, except for when he says: Ḥayya ‘ala’s-Ṣalāh, Ḥayya ‘ala’l-Falāḥ (حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَحَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ). Here you should says: Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illa Billāh (لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ). [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1/152, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1/288]

2. Say after the Adhān: ‘Ash-hadu ‘an lā ‘ilāha ‘illallāhu wahdahu lā sharīka lahu wa ‘anna Muḥammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasūluhu, raḍītu billāhi Rabban, wa bi-Muḥammadin Rasūlan wa bil’islāmi dīnan [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1/290]

3. Send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ) by saying: Allāhumma salli ‘ala Muḥammad wa Āli Muḥammad (اللّهُمّ صَلّ عَلَى مُحَمّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمّدٍ). Following this, recite: Allāhumma, Rabba hadhihid da‘watit-tāmmati was Ṣalātil qā’imah, ati Muḥammadanil wasilata wal-Fadīlata, wab’athhu Maqāmān Maḥmudān alladhi wa’adtahu [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1/152]

As reported by Jābir Ibn ‘Abdullāh, the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) stated that whoever hears the call to prayer and says the above supplication, then his intercession will be allowed for him on the Day of Resurrection.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 614]

4. Finally, take a moment to supplicate for yourself between the Adhān and Iqāmah. Anas Ibn Mālik narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said, “Supplication is not rejected between the call to prayer and its commencement.” When asked, “What should we say, O Messenger of Allāh?” he replied, “Ask Allāh for wellness in the world and the Hereafter.” [Sunan At-Tirmidhī 3594]

Islām is genuinely beautiful, and we express our gratitude to our Lord (Allāh) for granting us the precious gift of being Muslims. Sadly, in light of this blessing and the simplicity of these Adhkār and Du’ā’, many Muslims neglect to recite them during the Adhān. How often do people remain engrossed in their daily activities, missing out on tremendous blessings? To foster a deeper appreciation of Islām, we should wholeheartedly embrace its teachings.

I beseech Allāh to enhance our knowledge and understanding. Aameen.
