In the Name of Allāh.
The Muttaqun are the believers. Allāh describes them (in Sūrah Al-Baqarah [2] verses 3-4) saying: “Who believe in the Ghayb and perform As-Ṣalāh (Iqamat-as-Ṣalāh), and spend out of what we have provided for them (i.e. give Zakah and Sadaqah). And who believe in (the Qur’ān and the Sunnah) which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muḥammad ﷺ) and in [the Taurah (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] which were sent down before you and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell, etc.). They are on (true) guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.”
Qatadah said that Al-Muttaqin, are those whom Allāh has described in His Statement; Who believe in the Ghayb and perform the Ṣalāh (2:3), and the following Āyāt. Ibn Jarīr (Raḥimahullāh) stated that the Āyah (2:2) includes all of these meanings that the scholars have mentioned, and this is the correct view. [See Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr]
Allāh also describes them (in Sūrah Al-Mumenoon verses 1-11) saying: “Successful indeed are the believers, and He went on mentioning their lofty qualities (of strictly guarding and observing their Ṣalāt with full submissiveness, avoiding vain talks, paying Zakat, guarding their chastity, and upholding trust) after which He says, they are the inheritors, who shall inherit the Firdaws.”
Ibn ‘Abbas (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) said: “The Muttaqun are those believers who fear setting up partners with Allāh (Shirk) and act in obedience to Him.” He was also reported to have said, “They are those who remain cognizant of Allāh’s Punishment by not abandoning that which they know to be from guidance and they hope in His Mercy by believing everything that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) came with.” Al-Ḥasan Al-Basri (Raḥimahullāh) said, “They are those who keep away from what Allāh has prohibited for them and fulfill what Allāh has commanded them.”
The reward of the pious and righteous persons who obey Allāh and fear Him much by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden, is indeed Jannah. Allāh says (in Surah Al-Ḥijr verse 45):
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
“Truly! The Muttaqun will be amidst Gardens and water-springs (Paradise).”
I beseech Allāh to make it easy for us to be among the Mutaqqun. (Aameen)
