In the Name of Allāh.
After discussing Al-‘Abbās Ibn AbdulMuṭṭalib (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu), the Prophet (ﷺ)’s paternal uncle, let’s also talk about his second paternal uncle who witnessed Islām, embraced it, and became one of the companions. He is Abu ‘Umāra Ḥamzah Ibn ‘AbdulMuṭṭalib (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu). He was nicknamed “Sayyid Ash-Shuhadā’ (the Chief of the Martyrs)” by the Prophet (ﷺ).
When Ḥamzah accepted Islām, the Quraysh instantaneously realized that the Prophet (ﷺ) now bags additional strength. Accordingly, they canceled some ways of harrying the Prophet (ﷺ). Ḥamzah was described as the strongest man of Quraysh; fond of hunting, skilled in wrestling and archery, and known for his valor on the battlefield.
Indisputably, Ḥamzah was known for obeying the command of the Prophet (ﷺ). He had an encounter with the Quraysh and also fought in the battle of Badr. During the battle of Uhud, Ḥamzah was a victim of a plot. Waḥshī Ibn Harb was requested to kill him. Waḥshī himself narrated to ‘Ubaydullāh Ibn ‘Adiy who asked for the account. He said: “Yes, Ḥamzah killed Tuaima Ibn ‘Adiy Ibn Al-Khaiyar at Badr (battle) so my master, Jubayr Ibn Mut’im said to me, ‘If you kill Ḥamzah in revenge for my uncle, then you will be set free.‘” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4072]
Waḥshī succeeded in killing Ḥamzah. His soul departed to the land of no return. The demise of Ḥamzah Ibn ‘AbdulMuṭṭalib, the towering figure of strength and valor, was a sorrowful moment in the history of Islām. The Prophet (ﷺ) was aggrieved with great sadness. Ḥamzah was martyred – a fabulous end that pays those who love Allāh.
However, the legacy of Ḥamzah lives on as a beacon of obedience, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the Cause of Allāh and His Messenger (ﷺ). He was a man who, from the darkness of ignorance, was guided into the light of Islām, becoming a pillar of support for the Prophet (ﷺ) and a shining example for all Muslims.
I beseech Allāh to be Especially Merciful to Ḥamzah Ibn ‘AbdulMuṭṭalib and grant him the highest station in Jannah. Aameen
